SEO and performance

Does website speed affect SEO?

Website speed can support search performance and conversion, but a perfect PageSpeed score does not guarantee a high Google ranking. Search relevance and useful content still matter most. Performance is one part of the overall page experience.

Website speed can support search performance and conversion, but a perfect PageSpeed score does not guarantee a high Google ranking. Search relevance and useful content still matter most. Performance is one part of the overall page experience.

01

What Google actually says about speed

Google uses several systems and signals when ranking results. Its documentation explains that Core Web Vitals are used by ranking systems, while also making clear that good scores alone do not guarantee top rankings. A page that answers the search well can still outperform a faster page that is less relevant.

That means speed should be treated as a technical foundation, not a shortcut. It helps remove avoidable friction and supports the experience around useful content, clear services and trustworthy business information.

02

Core Web Vitals in plain language

Core Web Vitals focus on how quickly the main content appears, how responsive the page feels when someone interacts and whether the layout moves unexpectedly. They are measured with real-user data when enough traffic is available.

A laboratory test such as PageSpeed Insights is still valuable because it provides a repeatable diagnostic view. The lab score and real-user field data answer different questions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • Largest Contentful Paint: how quickly the main visible content loads
  • Interaction to Next Paint: how promptly the page responds to interaction
  • Cumulative Layout Shift: how visually stable the page remains while loading
03

Why speed matters beyond rankings

A slow or unstable page can make a visitor abandon an enquiry, miss an important button or distrust the website. On mobile connections, oversized images and unnecessary scripts become more noticeable.

Performance also affects how efficiently search crawlers and other automated services can retrieve pages. It is therefore useful even when a particular improvement does not create an immediate or measurable ranking change.

04

Common causes of a slow business website

Large unoptimised images, video backgrounds, multiple tracking scripts, heavy third-party widgets and excessive visual effects are common causes. The hosting platform, caching setup and amount of browser code also matter.

Start with changes that improve the visitor experience without removing the information needed to make a decision. Compressing an image is usually safer than deleting useful service content simply to chase a score.

  • Images much larger than their displayed size
  • Third-party scripts loaded before they are needed
  • Several font families and weights
  • Embedded tools on every page
  • Layout movement caused by missing dimensions
  • Slow server response or ineffective caching
05

How to use PageSpeed results

Test both phone and desktop versions of the public page. Look at the individual opportunities and diagnostics rather than treating the overall score as the only result. Re-test after meaningful changes and watch for regressions when adding advertising, booking or other external services.

AVSBL Website Health saves Google PageSpeed results for both device types and presents performance alongside accessibility, best practices, SEO and AI searchability checks. It is a monitoring tool, not a promise of rankings or a permanent score.

The AVSBL difference

How AVSBL manages performance foundations

AVSBL controls the published engine and automatically processes uploaded images into the web versions each layout needs. Customers do not have to configure image optimisation, caching or an uncontrolled collection of performance add-ons to establish a strong baseline.

Website Health saves Google PageSpeed results for phone and desktop alongside accessibility, best-practice and search checks. Scores can still change with content and external integrations, but AVSBL makes the result visible and maintains the platform foundation without expecting the owner to become a performance specialist.
